LIRR Suspends Eastbound Service Due To Derailment

Eastbound train service east of Patchogue station will be suspended all day Saturday due to an early morning accident on the tracks outside of Speonk.  During an attempted passing maneuver, a Montauk-bound passenger train carrying 32 people sideswiped a work train, causing both to partially derail and causing extensive track damage. Thankfully, the MTA reported there were no injuries to any of the 32 passengers, and the work train involved in the accident was unoccupied at the time. However, the derailment has shut down service to the Hamptons and the rest of the South Fork during the busy Memorial Day Weekend rush. LIRR officials are saying they expect service to be suspended all day, and are warning passengers boarding trains at Penn Station and Jamacia they will not be able to travel east of Patchogue by rail. Regular train service will continue to Patchogue and Riverhead stations. Stay tuned for more updates.
