Shucking Some Oysters With Catch Oyster Bar And Blue Point Brewery

Last night we had the pleasure of attending an oyster shucking event sponsored by Blue Point Brewery, hosted right here at Catch Oyster Bar.  Along with their work with the Billion Oyster Project and their "Shuck It" oyster campaign, these classes continue Blue Point's initiatives to educate and bring the local Blue Point oyster name back to Long Island. Local oyster expert and master shucker Keenan Doyle (IG@TallMuthaShucka) was brought in to give attendees the lowdown on oyster culture across the country and but particularly right here on Long Island.  Topics ranged from the different types of regional offerings, down to the work done on the oyster farm, and how these and factors can affect flavor and sizes. But the meat of the event so to speak, was learning how to shuck an oyster like a pro.  Keenan demonstrated proper techniques, and instructed us on the finer points of shucking, including many safety tips.  Afterwards along with our classmates, we tried our best to open up a variety of Catch Oysters using the official Blue Point shucking knife included in our event goodie bag.  In addition to the oysters, Owner & Chef Mike Avino served up a delicious pan seared bronzino over a chilled sweet potato/plantain puree, grilled asparagus on the side, enveloped in a smoked sausage, apple, and rosemary demi-glaze.  Select varieties of Blue Point beer were also available to pair with the oysters.  Needless to say, we had a great time, and think you will too! Stay tuned to our website for more local events like this, and make sure to visit Catch Oyster Bar next time you are in town.
