Town Demolishes Long Vacant and Abandoned Coram Swap and Shop
Farmingville, NY – On April 22, Councilwoman Jane Bonner (fourth from left), Councilman Michael Loguercio (left) and members of the Coram Civic Association were on-hand when the Town demolished the vacant and abandoned Swap and Shop on Middle Country Road in Coram. The derelict building had remained vacant for over 20 years and was the source of resident complaints leading to numerous Town of Brookhaven building code violations. It was demolished in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code which provides a “fast track” to rid the Town of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner.
Councilwoman Bonner said, “This property has been an eyesore for so many years and I am happy that it has finally been demolished. The Town has made great progress by cleaning up abandoned residential and commercial properties like this and I will continue to target and remove more of them throughout my Council District.”
Councilman Loguercio said, “A dilapidated building lowers the value of nearby properties no matter where they are. They also attract a bad element of people who have a detrimental impact on the neighborhood. I commend our Law Department for their efforts to remove this eyesore and help clean up this very active commercial district.”
